The 50+ MOT: Why You Need a Quarterly Health Service

Every three months or so, the best way to optimize your health is by giving yourself a checklist and an MOT. We wouldn’t dream of driving a car for years without a service or an inspection, yet most men treat their bodies like they’ll just run forever on fumes and luck.

If you want to stay under the hood of your own health, you need a recurring “Service History.” Here is your 4-point checklist for the over-50 man.

1. Get Your “Fluid Levels” Checked (Blood Work)

You likely already get standard checks from the GP, but for a man over 50, you need to go deeper. You need to know exactly what is happening with your hormonal and nutritional baseline.

  • Key Markers: Make sure you are testing for Total and Free Testosterone, and Vitamin D.

  • The Benefit: This data is your roadmap. It tells you if your current supplements are actually working or if you’re just flushing money down the toilet. Remember: not all supplements are equal in quality. If your Vitamin D levels are still low despite taking a pill, it’s time to change the brand or the dosage.

2. The Bodywork Service (Sports Massage)

Treat yourself to a professional sports massage. This isn’t about “pampering”—it’s about maintenance. A skilled therapist will help relax chronically tense muscles, improve blood flow to old injuries, and, most importantly, diagnose muscular imbalances you didn’t even realize you had. Think of this as checking your wheel alignment; it keeps the chassis straight so you don’t “wear out” your joints unevenly.

3. Re-Evaluate Your Objectives

Are you happy with where things are? Your goals at 52 might be different than they were at 50.

  • Are you still trying to gain muscle?

  • Is the focus now on dropping body fat?

  • Do you just want to move without pain? Be honest with yourself. If your current program isn’t moving the needle on your current goal, it’s time to tweak the plan.

4. Update Your “Software” (Continuous Learning)

The health and fitness world doesn’t change overnight, but it does get optimized. For years, the “official” food pyramids had the logic completely backward—prioritizing processed carbs over quality nutrition. Every health professional knew it, and finally, the model is shifting toward “Real Food.”

  • The New Nutrition Logic: We now know the priority must be high-quality protein, nutrient-dense whole foods, and healthy fats while cutting the ultra-processed rubbish.

  • The Supplement Shift: Even old staples like Creatine—already the most researched strength supplement in the world—are now being recommended for brain health and cognitive longevity.

Keep reading, keep updating, and keep tweaking. The man who stops learning is the man who stops improving.
